Welcome! Why Food Allergies?

Hey, there, folks. My name is Hannah. To welcome you to this blog, I want to answer a few questions you may have.

  1. Why create a blog about food allergies?

I was diagnosed with Celiac at the age of four. But two years later, we found out I had a respiratory allergy to wheat. Ingesting the smallest amount would cause anaphylaxis. The limitations this placed on our lives were extreme. Things we took for granted before – going to a restaurant, eating at a friend’s house – were now not only impossible, they were dangerous.

Growing up with food allergies, they didn’t bother me as much as they might have if I had been diagnosed later in life. But entering my teen years made me see food allergies in a very different light. And I began to feel as though I just survived.

I created this blog to help other teens and young adults learn to thrive with food allergies. Also, perhaps most importantly, to help raise awareness about food allergies in an effort to make this allergy-filled world safer.

2. Why should I talk openly about my food allergy?
This was the hardest thing for me to get over. I didn’t want to talk about it. I didn’t want to draw attention to myself. But if we are to break down the barriers of isolation that exist due to food allergies, we have to talk about it. So I want this blog to be a safe place to do so. Because trust me, I get it. And whether you struggle with a moderate or severe allergy, whether it is dairy or gluten or pear juice or latex, it’s all the same. And you are not alone.

What you can expect to see from A Need to Breathe:

  • Posts about coping with food allergies, no matter when you were diagnosed;
  • Tips for avoiding contamination in various settings;
  • Exciting new options for people with food allergies;
  • Learning how to talk about the dangers of contamination and allergic reactions to people who may not get it;
  • Equipping teens with the confidence and caution they need to take a dangerous food allergy in an allergen-filled world;
  • Raising awareness (how and why);
  • Learning how to thrive with food allergies!
